**Light and Heavy**
Vocal weight is the sound of intensity and forcefulness, making it sound more “buzzy” the more weight is applied when speaking. A heavier voice is generally perceived as more masculine, meanwhile a lighter voice more feminine. This sound quality is determined by the spectral slope that is the distribution of energy in the sound produced by the vibration of the vocal folds. Thicker vocal fold shapes produce heavier-sounding spectral slopes, while thinner vocal fold shapes produce lighter-sounding spectral slopes.
